Have you ever shopped in a Salvation Army thrift store? Ever called our office to have your furniture picked up as a donation? If so, chances are you have encountered one or two of the men and women who are successfully progressing through The Salvation Army's residential alcohol and drug rehabilitation program. These same individuals are the ones working in our thrift stores and driving our trucks.
The Salvation Army operates a very successful drug rehab program in cities throughout the country. Right here in Philadelphia, our "Adult Rehabilitation Center" is able to accomodate 125 men and women, most of whom come from short term recovery and detoxification programs but need a program that will offer them more intensive support and counseling over the longer haul. Residents remain on average between three and nine months, but sometimes even longer. Our unique rehabilitation strategy combines work therapy (establishing a healthy routine and responsible work habits, as well as building upon pre-developed skills) with individual recovery counseling, almost daily support group participation, basic needs provision (food, clothing, shelter, and medical attention), and spiritual direction (including elective Bible studies, Christian counseling and Sunday chapel services).
264 men and women successfully completed our recovery program in Philadelphia in 1995.
